Proper aftercare is essential for making sure your tattoo heals correctly and stays vibrant, healthy, and sharp for years to come. A tattoo is an investment in your skin, and how you care for it in the first few weeks and long after will directly affect how it looks over time. Follow these steps carefully to protect your new artwork and support a smooth, clean heal.
Tattoo Aftercare
1. Remove your bandage
Leave the bandage on for 1–3 hours. Your artist covered the tattoo to protect it from bacteria—treat it like the fresh wound it is.
2. Wash your tattoo
Gently wash the area with lukewarm water and a mild antibacterial soap.
Use only your hands—no washcloths or anything abrasive.
Pat dry with a clean towel or paper towel. Do not rub.
3. Apply a thin layer of Modern Heritage Tattoo Balm
Once the tattoo is clean and dry, apply a very thin layer of Modern Heritage Tattoo Balm to moisturize and protect the area.
Use the balm 2–3 times a day for the first 3 days.
Do not re-bandage your tattoo and do not let it fully dry out.
4. Continue moisturizing
After the first 3 days, continue using Modern Heritage Tattoo Balm or a gentle everyday lotion. Keep the tattoo lightly moisturized at all times—never overly greasy.
5. Expect normal healing
Around day 3–4, your tattoo may start to flake or peel.
Do not pick, scratch, or peel the skin—this can pull out ink and cause scarring.
It may appear shiny toward the end of the healing process; this is normal and will fade as the skin fully heals.
6. Avoid shaving
Do not shave over the healing tattoo until it is fully healed.
Long-Term Care
Protect from the sun
Once healed, always apply SPF 30+ when exposing your tattoo to sunlight. UV rays can fade and dull the artwork quickly.
Keep it moisturized
Continue using Modern Heritage Tattoo Balm as part of your long-term skincare routine to maintain vibrancy and keep your tattoo looking fresh.
